March of Babies Celebration
March for Babies will celebrate its 39th year raising funds to fight the battle against birth defects. March for Babies is not only California’s largest, but also the nation’s oldest and most successful walking campaign in the country. Started in 1970, more than 40,000 walkers in California will join together to participate in March for Babies to help raise critical funds for America’s mothers and babies. Invite your family and friends to join you in March for Babies, or even form a Family Team.
The March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. And if something goes wrong, we offer information and comfort to families. We research problems that threaten our babies and work on preventing them. Please visit www.marchforbabies.org or call Rita Rogers at 951.892.7922 for more information.

Dialogue on Access to Care
Countless lives will be lost to cancer every year in the Inland Empire. Many of these deaths could be avoided with early detection and adequate treatment. Unfortunately, there are disparities in access to care and treatment. Join us for historical Dialogue on Access to Care, August 27 at the St. Bernardine's Medical Center.
In addition to an impressive line-up of experts, the session features a "Cancer Survivor's Panel" in which survivors representing all walks of life will share their impacting stories of courage and resilience, as well as barriers to health care that they confronted.
The Latino Health Collaborative is an active partner organizing this event, which coincides and will take the place of our regular scheduled meeting (4th Wednesday of the month). Therefore, we encourage ALL our members, friends, and partners to attend this Dialogue on Access to Care and support this solution-focused event. The meeting is free and open to everyone. Starts with dinner and registration at 4:00pm. Venue: Matich Conference Center, at St. Bernardine's Medical Center. Please RSVP to Judith Padilla by August 20 at 951-300-1215 or judith.padilla@cancer.org. Click here for flyer for more details.
Health Disparities Campaign
The Latino Health Collaborative will NOT be having its 'regular' monthly meeting in July. Throughout the month of July and part of August, the various subcommittees for the Health Disparities Campaign are meeting to discuss strategies to ensure a successful event in the Fall 08. Please contact Ed McField at esmcfield@latinohealthcollaborative.org for additional information about the monthly meetings or to be a part of the planning of the historic Health Disparities Awareness Campaign.
Health Disparities: UnNatural Causes- Is Inequality Making us Sick?
The Latino Health Collaborative hosted a screening of the provocative documentary UnNatural Causes- Is Inequality Making us Sick? Attendees were welcomed by Dr. Albert Arteaga, Chair of the Latino Health Collaborative. Dr. Juan C. Belliard, Loma Linda University Center for Health Disparities Research, then led the group in the reactions to the video and discussion the region wide (Riverside and San Bernardino counties) Health Disparities Awareness Campaign that will be launched later this year. The turn out, which exceeded all expectations with standing room only, resulted in a hefty discussion of health inequities, but more importantly, what is being done and what else could be done to address environmental or structural health inhibitors. Participants left excited and committed to furthering health-promoting strategies. A big THANKS to the team at the Community Hospital of San Bernardino for being such a supportive partner and allowing the use of the Auditorium. As the slogan affirms: Together We Can!
Monthly Meeting: Health Disparities Awareness Campaign
Join us for another 'solution-focused' and 'action-oriented' meeting of the Latino Health Collaborative, next Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 2pm at the Community Hospital of San Bernardino in the Henderson Auditorium. This promises to be another exciting session. The session includes a ‘private’ screening of UnNatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? Did you know that recent Mexican immigrants, although poorer, tend to be healthier than the average American. They have lower rates of death, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses, despite being less educated, earning less and having the stress of adapting to a new country and a new language. In research circles, this is the Latino paradox. But as they are here longer, their health advantage erodes. After five years or more in the U.S., they are 1.5 times more likely to have high blood pressure – and be obese – than when they arrived. Within one generation, their health is as poor as other Americans of similar income status. What can we do about this in the Inland Empire?
Come and help us develop strategies to engage community stakeholders and policymakers in the county-wide Health Disparities Awareness Campaign that will be launched in August. We will have special guests and moderators to facilitate the discussion. We look forward to having you. Light snack will be provided.

A diverse group of stakeholders and community representatives met on Wednesday, May 28 for the monthly meeting of the Latino Health Collaborative. Although there were no more seating spaces, those in attendance enjoyed the session and described the meeting as 'high energy', 'action oriented', and a 'meeting with a purpose'. The session included a pre-planning discussion of the Health Disparities Awareness Campaign, which was led by Dr. Juan Belliard. The meeting was capped with a thought-provoking and impacting presentation by Dr. Robbin Huff-Musgrove, Cultural Competency Officer in the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health. The Board of the Latino Health Collaborative thanks all who attended. Next meeting: June 25, 2008.
Molina Healthcare donation to Latino Health Collaborative
The Latino Health Collaborative received a $1000 grant from Molina Healthcare of California as the fiscal agent and sponsor of the Health Initiative of the Americas-Inland Empire. We congratulate Dr. Nattress for the recognition and his committment to service to the Latino community.
